As we have discussed in our article on cotton suits here, these are good alternatives to the more formal wool varieties if you want to wear tailored clothing in a more casual way. You still benefit from the shape that a suit through the classic silhouette, but the elements of the cotton fabric bring down the formality. It can still work for an office environment, but it will also fit neatly into more social situations where you don’t want to appear too formal. 

The main factor behind the cotton suit that makes it more casual is the cotton fabric which creases more than wool and, therefore, you don’t get the same clean drape. Over time, the cotton will also lighten in colour around places like the elbows As you wear the suit, it will mould to your body which will add to its appeal over time. There is also a bit more potential to play around with colours in cotton suits. This example is a lighter shade of navy which again is a more casual choice. You can also think about green, cream, beige or brown alternatives that work well for cotton suits. 

The suit here is in a 12-13oz cotton which is ideal for most periods of the year. It is versatile enough to wear in hot weather and when temperatures dip. In very cold weather, there will be better options but you can always add an overcoat on top. An added bonus for cotton suits is that they will also work as separates much better than wool suits. You can easily wear the cotton trousers as tailored chinos with polo shirts or knitwear and the jacket will also pair with linen trousers to create different outfits.

The styling in this outfit is made more casual through the use of a white long-sleeved polo shirt (see this article) and unlined loafers with no socks. This lends a much more casual feel to the whole outfit. It would be borderline whether this is acceptable in an office environment, particularly more formal ones. A better application is in smart casual settings, especially in warm weather. You can always add a pocket square for some extra decoration.
