These are a more unusual style of trousers that are named after the Gurkhas (Nepalese soldiers). These type of trousers are distinguished by the waistband which is much thicker than a typical waistband. There are different ways of structuring the closure involving straps and buckles with side tabs or buttons. This style of trouser is a more sartorial choice and it also gives a more flattering appearance by raising where the trouser sits on the waist. They are also usually styled with pleats. 

This style of trouser is ideal for wearing casually with a shirt or polo shirt. As there is a lot of visual interest from the waistband, it suits a more simple outfit. You could incorporate this style into a suit but it may be going too far and they are more appropriate for casual looks with a shirt and a sports jacket. 

There are a range of shoes that can be paired with Gurkha trousers. You could wear them with formal dress shoes and they would also pair with sports shoes at the other end of the formality scale. Loafers are a good choice which are in the middle of the formality scale.

Fabric choices for gurkha trousers

The fabric is typically cotton for these trousers. But they could be rendered in any fabric. For colder climates, you could wear them in wool or heavy cottons whereas you could wear them in linen or lighter cottons in the summer. This example is a mid weight cotton which is useful fro trousers as they wear fairly cool in hot weather but still keep their shape after periods of wear.
