Cream cotton trousers

This is a simple outfit for summer involving the menswear staple of cream cotton trousers, or chinos. Cotton trousers are a versatile, semi-formal item that can be worn year round. As they are a neutral colour, they can be worn with a variety of other colours. They can also be dressed up or down depending on the environment.

In this example, the cotton is 12-13 oz which makes them suitable for year round use. You can go for lighter weights for summer, but be aware that you might sacrifice some drape if you much lighter than 10 oz. Heavier weights can also work well for winter use and there are other variations of cotton in heavier weights that are often used for trousers (twill, corduroy, moleskin).

The colour is very versatile and can be worn with a variety of shirts and shoes. It also pairs well with knitwear, outerwear and more casual items such a t-shirts. In this case, it is paired with an olive linen shirt for a casual summer look. Other colours, such as white, beige, olive and grey are alternatives to cream that you will find useful. See our article on formal trousers for men for more advice.

The fit and style is fairly standard for mens trousers. Slim, but not skinny, and with a flat front. They have side adjusters rather than belt loops. They are designed with turn-ups, or cuffs, which gives them a more casual appearance.

This type of trouser could be worn in formal environments such as the office but not for the most formal occasions. They can easily be dressed up with a shirt, tie and jacket if needed and more formal shoes such as Oxfords. See this outfit, for example.
